The Mid-America Conference championship is the second-longest running league title game after the SEC (the Big 12 ended its championship after 2010). This league's contest has taken place at Ford Field in Detroit since 2003, as the game was previously played at the school with the best record (1997-2002). The winners of the Eastern and Western divisions of the MAC meet in the title game, as Northern Illinois has played in the championship each of the last five years.
Four different teams captured the MAC championship from 2014-17 as Toledo held off Akron in 2017 at Ford Field for its first conference title since 2004. However, Northern Illinois was back on top in 2018, edging a 10-win Buffalo team with a 30-29 comeback victory. NIU now has the most MAC title game victories (four) among active members. They were able to erase a 22-10 halftime deficit to stun the Bulls in the end.
Marshall participated in the first six MAC title games (including five at home), winning five times before exiting the conference to head to Conference USA. Central Michigan and Toledo currently own the second-most MAC titles for active league members with three, while Miami (Ohio) has claimed two conference championships.

Dec 05, 2019 It was coming off a 6-6 season that was fine, but Ohio was supposed to be the star in the East with defending division champ Buffalo potentially rebuilding in a hurry. The RedHawks got by UB early on and got the win they absolutely had to have against Ohio to make their first MAC title game since winning it in 2010. Nov 28, 2018  Since 2005, the Huskies have won three MAC championships and have appeared in eight MAC title games, including a 34-14 loss to Bowling Green in.

The MAC Football Championship Game is a football game between the winners of the East and West divisions of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) to determine the conference champion. The game has been played since 1997, when the conference was first divided into divisions and since 2003 has been sponsored by Marathon Petroleum (officially known as the Marathon MAC Football Championship Game). The winner of the game is guaranteed a berth in a bowl game which the MAC has contractual obligations to field a team. Unlike the MAC's Group of Five contemporaries, which hold their respective championship games on campus sites, the MAC Championship Game is held at a neutral site, Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan since 2004.

In 2000, 2001, and 2007, due to an unbalanced conference schedule, the team with best division record within each division was awarded that division's championship game berth. In other years, the teams with the best overall conference records received a berth.

The game is held on the first Saturday in December, on the same weekend that other NCAA Division I FBS conferences hold their championship games.
